Michael “Mike” Schaefer was born and raised in Grand Forks, North Dakota. After graduating from the University of North Dakota, he worked as a property casualty underwriter for Sentry Insurance for three years. In 1973 he opened an independent insurance agency that eventually took the name of Schaefer Insurance Services. In 2012, Schaefer Insurance Services merged with Thompson Insurance of Grand Forks to create Thompson-Schaefer Insurance     

Mike has served on the agents’ advisory board for Employers Mutual Casualty Company and North Star Mutual Insurance Company. He has served on various local non-profit boards and is an active member of the Grand Forks Exchange Club. He and his wife, Paulette, have two children and four grandchildren.
